Fire caused by welding in the spray paint room

(1) Accident process

When welder A was welding a workpiece in the spray paint room, welding sparks splashed onto a nearby wooden board with a thick paint film, causing a fire. The workers on the scene panicked. Some used brooms to put out the fire, while others used compressed air to blow the fire, causing the fire to spread. After half an hour of rescue by the fire brigade, the fire was extinguished. Although no one was injured, it caused great property losses.

(2) Analysis of the main causes

① Before welding in the fire-prohibited area, the fire operation was carried out without approval, violating the operating procedures.
② The fire operation was carried out without removing the paint film in the room and taking any fire prevention measures.
③ The fire extinguishing method was improper. The compressed air was used to blow the fire incorrectly, which not only failed to extinguish the fire, but also fueled the fire, causing the accident to expand.

(3) Main preventive measures

① Open flame operations are not allowed in the spray paint room. If welding is necessary, the open flame approval system should be implemented.
② Remove all combustible materials.
③ The paint room should be equipped with sand, foam or carbon dioxide fire extinguishing equipment.
