What is positive connection?

In the field of welding, positive connection (positive polarity) refers to the DC arc welding method in which the workpiece is connected to the positive terminal of the power source and the electrode to the negative terminal. The principle is that when the workpiece is connected to the positive terminal, the current passing through the workpiece generates significant resistance heat, causing it to heat faster. Simultaneously, the electrode, acting as the negative terminal, emits electrons, forming a stable arc.

Positive connection is characterized by a stable arc, minimal spatter, and a beautiful weld, but it also results in shallower weld penetration. It is primarily used for welding thin plates or materials requiring a smooth weld surface, such as stainless steel and aluminum. Furthermore, with certain basic electrodes, positive connection can reduce the formation of pores.

When choosing a positive connection, consider factors such as the specific welding material, thickness, groove type, and desired weld quality. Different types of welding machines (e.g., AC and DC) may differ in the implementation and effectiveness of positive and negative connection.
