What is acid welding rod?

Acidic electrodes are electrodes whose coatings contain a high concentration of acidic oxides. Acidic electrodes come in five types: high-titanium oxide, calcium-titanium oxide, ilmenite, iron oxide, and cellulose. The high content of acidic oxides (such as SiO2 and TiO2) in the coatings provides excellent welding performance, including arc stability, easy slag removal, aesthetically pleasing welds, and minimal spatter. These electrodes are suitable for both AC and DC power sources. These electrodes are often used for decorative applications, such as cap welding. A disadvantage of acidic electrodes is the high diffusible hydrogen content in the weld, resulting in poor crack resistance. These electrodes are unsuitable for welding rigid surfaces and thick plate structures. Furthermore, their low weld toughness makes them unsuitable for welding structures subjected to dynamic loads or at low temperatures. Increasing the content of basic oxides in the coating improves weld toughness, resulting in calcium-titanium oxide and ilmenite electrodes having higher weld toughness than high-titanium oxide electrodes, making them suitable for welding critical surfaces. Cellulose-type electrodes offer higher weld toughness and can weld pipeline steels of various strength levels. They are particularly suitable for vertical downward welding and bottom-layer welding of pipelines.
