Welding Electrode Selection and Industry Application Guide

The selection of welding electrodes requires comprehensive consideration of the base metal type, welding position, and service environment. For carbon structural steel welding, acidic electrodes (such as E4303) are preferred due to their low sensitivity to impurities; while basic electrodes (such as E5015) are suitable for important low-alloy steels to ensure weld crack resistance.

In terms of application scenarios:

Pipeline welding: Horizontal fixed obstacle welding often uses shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) for the root pass and CO₂ gas shielded welding for the fill and cover passes, balancing efficiency and sealing.

Robotic welding: Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with mixed gas shielded metal arcs (such as 80% Ar + 20% CO₂) has become mainstream, improving the consistency of automated production.

Industry trends indicate that ultra-low hydrogen electrodes and moisture-resistant electrodes are gradually becoming more widespread, especially in marine engineering and low-temperature environments, where their resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking is significantly superior to traditional products.
