Electrical Safety on Power Station Welding Projects: What to Specify Alongside Your Consumables

Power station projects are usually described as welding work — pressure parts, structural steel, pipe spools — but the job does not end when the last joint passes inspection. Before the plant is handed over, the same site energises switchgear, transformers and distribution boards, and the crews still on site are then working next to live medium- and high-voltage equipment.

That transition changes the dominant hazard. During fabrication it is heat, spatter, fume and arc flash from the welding process itself. Once equipment is energised, the risk becomes step and touch potential: the voltage is no longer something you can switch off locally, and the protection that matters is insulation and verification rather than a welding screen.

Two ranges, one site

For the fabrication phase, electrodes and wires are chosen for the base metal and the welding position: E6013 and E6011 for general structural work, E7018 where low-hydrogen deposits are required, ER70S-6 and flux-cored wires where deposition rate matters. Those choices are covered elsewhere on this site.

For the commissioning phase the equipment is different in kind. YJH POWER, our electrical safety equipment division, manufactures insulating rubber matting manufactured and tested to IEC 61111 for switchgear and distribution rooms, in classes covering 1 kV to 36 kV. The same range covers insulating gloves, voltage detectors and portable earthing sets — the items an electrical crew needs before it can work on or near equipment that is live.

Why it is worth specifying together

On a power station package the welding consumables and the electrical protection are bought by the same procurement team, delivered to the same site and consumed during overlapping phases. Specifying them from one supplier group shortens the qualification work, because the certificates, test reports and factory information come from the same company, and it avoids the situation where matting arrives after the crew that needs it.

If you are pricing a power station project and want the electrical safety items quoted alongside the welding consumables, send us the switchgear voltage and the room dimensions. We will confirm the mat class and size, and quote the full set — matting, insulating gloves, voltage detectors and portable earthing sets to IEC 61230 — against the same delivery schedule as the consumables.
