Diesel tank explosion due to welding repair

The main process of the accident

A diesel tank installed on a car in a tractor factory had a damaged oil outlet pipe near the oil valve that needed to be welded. The operator drained the diesel in the tank without cleaning it and only opened the inlet cover to weld it. The explosion occurred instantly, killing 3 people on the spot.

The main reasons for the accident

(1) After the diesel in the tank was drained, there was still an oil film on the inner surface of the tank wall, and oil and gas were released in the tank, which easily formed an explosive mixed gas with the incoming air and was detonated by the high temperature of welding;

(2) The welder's blind welding was one of the main reasons for the accident.

How to prevent the accident?

(1) The diesel tank must be replaced before welding, and welding can only be carried out after it meets the cleaning standard;

(2) When welding, all covers and valves of the tank should be opened and compressed air should be passed.
