What is ER70S-6 welding wire used for?

ER70S-6 is a copper coated solid wire for gas shielded MIG welding of carbon steel. It deposits at the 500 MPa level and is the general purpose wire for structural steel, sheet metal, automotive and general fabrication work.

Which shielding gas should be used with ER70S-6?

Either pure CO2 or a mixture of 80 percent argon and 20 percent CO2. Pure CO2 gives deeper penetration and lower cost, while the argon mix gives a smoother arc, less spatter and a better bead appearance.

What diameters and spools are available?

0.8mm, 0.9mm, 1.0mm, 1.2mm and 1.6mm. Supplied on 5kg, 15kg or 20kg spools, with 15kg and 20kg being the usual export packing for machine welding in fabrication shops.

What does the S6 in ER70S-6 mean?

The S marks it as a solid wire, and the 6 identifies the deoxidation level. A higher deoxidiser content lets the wire tolerate mill scale and light rust on the plate without porosity, which is why it outsells ER70S-3.

What positions can ER70S-6 weld?

All positions. Flat and horizontal work is normally run with spray transfer on the argon mix, while vertical and overhead work uses short circuit or pulsed transfer at lower heat input.
