SG2 and SG3 MIG Wire FAQ

What is SG2 wire and how does it relate to ER70S-6?

SG2 is the European designation for a copper coated solid wire for carbon steel, roughly equivalent to ER70S-6. The chemistry is close enough that either can usually be substituted, but the certificate states which standard it is tested to.

What is the difference between SG2 and SG3?

SG3 carries a higher silicon and manganese level than SG2, which gives better tolerance to mill scale and slightly better strength. SG2 is the everyday choice, and SG3 is used where surface condition is poorer.

Which standard should the certificate quote?

For export to Europe, EN ISO 14341-A G42 4 M G3Si1 is the usual reference for SG2. For North America, AWS A5.18 ER70S-6 applies. Both describe the same class of wire with slightly different test requirements.

What diameters and spools are supplied?

0.8mm, 0.9mm, 1.0mm, 1.2mm and 1.6mm, on 5kg, 15kg or 20kg spools. The 15kg spool is the most common for general fabrication, and the 20kg for heavier production welding.

Can SG2 be used for soldering?

No. SG2 is a welding wire and melts far above soldering temperatures. If a joint is genuinely soldered, a filler with a much lower melting point is needed, and mixing the two terms up leads to the wrong consumable being ordered.
