Submerged arc welding wire is a kind of welding material, which is used for welding carbon steel with correspondingly lower strength alloy steel.

The welding material is composed of welding wire and flux. During submerged arc welding, the composition and performance of the weld are determined by the welding wire and flux. The selection of submerged arc welding wire should consider not only the influence of flux composition, but also the influence of base metal composition. In order to achieve the required weld metal composition, a flux (smelting flux) can also be used in combination with several welding wires. It is also possible to use a kind of welding wire to cooperate with several kinds of fluxes (sintered fluxes).

Submerged arc welding wire is a welding material in which the arc is automatically buried in the weld during the welding process, thereby automating the weld.

Stable weld quality Submerged arc welding wire has a fast welding speed, so it is very suitable in the production line workshop where welding is fast, which can ensure consistent and stable weld quality, and can also ensure the stability of the welding arc. Submerged Arc Welding Wire FAQ

What is submerged arc welding wire?

It is a bare solid wire fed into a blanket of granular flux. The arc burns under the flux, so there is no visible arc, almost no fume and no spatter, which is why SAW is used for long straight seams on thick plate.

Why does SAW need a matching flux?

The wire and the flux together determine the deposit chemistry and the mechanical properties. Changing flux without changing wire changes silicon, manganese and oxygen in the weld, so the certificate only applies to the tested combination.

What thickness is SAW used for?

Normally from around 10mm upward, because the process is set up for deep penetration at high current. It is the standard method for pressure vessel shells, pipe longitudinal seams, beams and heavy structural sections.

What wire diameters are supplied?

2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.0mm are the common sizes, supplied on 25kg, 50kg or 100kg coils depending on the size and the customer's feeder. Larger diameters carry higher current for deeper single pass penetration.

Does SAW wire need to be dry?

Yes. Moisture on the wire or in the flux goes straight into the weld as hydrogen, and SAW deposits are thick enough that hydrogen cracking becomes a real risk. Both wire and flux should be stored dry and flux should be baked.
